District 37: Kerry Marren — “District 37 includes many rural communities where agriculture and land stewardship are central to the local identity. Growth should be thoughtful and balanced so development does not come at the expense of farmland, natural resources, or the character of our communities,” says Marren, a member of the current board who serves on the Advisory Committee on Data Centers. She adds, “Projects of this scale should not move forward without clear standards, transparency, and meaningful local input.” Challenger Katie Michel is also concerned about protecting rural communities, but we endorse Marren because of her proven track record on the board.

This friendly incumbent from the town of Christiana has a lot of passion for rural living, and she brings that to her job of representing southeast Dane County on the board. She loves Madison but says rural areas like hers deserve more say. Taxes are a concern, she says, and she generally supports plans to revive the Dane County Coliseum. That could save the county money and bring in some new revenue. She calls herself a fan of the sheriff and opposed freezing law enforcement positions. With her job coordinating a food pantry, she is on the front lines of helping struggling families. Marren wants to give local residents more say in big projects such as the large solar farm near Cambridge. Our editorial board supported the solar project, yet we respect her strong advocacy for local residents who didn’t.
